Wood  Badge

On the morning of September 8, 1919, a 62-year-old retired British Army General stepped into the center of a clearing in Gilwell Park, Epping Forest, outside of London. He raised to his lips the horn of the great kudu, one of the largest African antelopes. He blew a long, sharp blast, and 19 men gathered in patrols for a new training course for Scout leaders.

Robert Stephenson Smyth. Baden-Powell (B-P), founder of the worldwide Scouting movement, realized trained leaders would be a key to the movement’s success. At the end
of the training program, B-P looked for a suitable recognition. He chose the wooden beads from a chieftain’s necklace he had received during his military service in Africa, and put them on a leather bootlace, a symbol of good luck. The training course and the recognition became known as the “Wood Badge.” The tradition continues and a new one begins; Today the San Gabriel Valley Council, Boy Scouts of America, with the help of its Tri-Council partners— Long Beach Area Council and Verdugo Hills Council—is pleased to offer the 21st-
Century Wood Badge Training to all adult leaders registered in the BSA.

WOOD BADGE: A Two-Step Process:

Step 1: The Practical Course
For two 3-day sessions (about 8am Friday to 6pm Sunday), you will live, learn, and work with other Scouters while being exposed to the leadership skills applicable to the development of high-performance teams. You will also develop a set of goals (the “Ticket”) to be completed in the 18 months following the course.

2014 Course Schedule
August 22-24, 2014
September 19-21, 2014
Holcomb Valley Scout Reservation and Trask Scout Reservation
and at least 2 Mid-Course Patrol Mtgs.

Step 2: The Application Phase
September 22, 2014-March 22, 2016
During the application phase you will apply the leadership skills that you learned during the course by working the goals (the “Ticket”) that you established and that your Troop Guide/Ticket Counselor approved during the course. Throughout this period, your guide acts as a resource counselor and a Scouting Friend to help you complete your “ticket” and accomplish your goals in Scouting. After your guide confirms that you have achieved your goals, you will receive the Wood Badge neckerchief, woggle and beads, a worldwide recognition, to wear with your Scouting Field Uniform.

Who May Attend:
You qualify to participate in this exciting experience if you are an adult leader registered in the BSA and have completed the basic training course for your Scouting position.

The total cost of the course is $245.00, due by July 21, 2014. This fee covers training materials, a course hat, food for the first session and recognition items. In addition, you will need to provide your Scout uniform, personal camping gear, and some food for the second session. To accept this invitation, submit the completed application form along with a payment of at least $50.00 to the San Gabriel Valley Council. Participants will be accepted on a first-come/first-served basis until the course reaches capacity. Alternates will be placed on a stand-by list.

Uniform and Other Needs:
For the course, Scouters will need a complete BSA Field uniform for the program in which they are currently registered. This includes a shirt, pants or shorts, appropriate socks and belt. Information on other clothing and equipment needs will be provided to each registered participant prior to the course.

While Wood Badge is not a survival course, there will be significant outdoor activity with lots of exercise. You must provide a current Annual Health and Medical Record form parts A, B, C with medical clearance dated between September 30, 2013 and September 22, 2014 – to be submitted in time for use in planning and for the duration of the course.
